Strengthening Agricultural Value Chains: First Stakeholder Consultation on Food Security Regulations

On December 6, 2024, the Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) hosted the inaugural stakeholder consultation in Dar es Salaam to review draft regulations for implementing the Food Security Act (Cap. 249) and amendments to the Cereals and Other Produce Act (Cap. 274). The event marked a critical step toward improving food security, enhancing value chain efficiency, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Tanzania.

This consultation gathered a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the private sector, NGOs, development partners, and donors. The goal was to gather meaningful feedback on the proposed regulations, ensuring they address the real needs and challenges of farmers and other actors within the agricultural value chain. These regulations are poised to benefit multiple sectors overseen by COPRA, including:

  • 🌾 Cereals
  • 🌻 Oilseeds and Nuts
  • 🥬 Horticultural Crops (fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs, flowers, and pyrethrum)
  • 🌱 Pulses/Legumes
  • 🍠 Roots and Tubers

The new regulations aim to strengthen the agricultural ecosystem by improving efficiency, sustainability, and market integration. They seek to create a seamless connection between producers, processors, traders, and consumers, ensuring each link in the value chain functions effectively.

AMDT was proud to participate in this pivotal session, reaffirming its commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural development. AMDT’s involvement highlights the importance of collaboration between public institutions and development partners to achieve shared goals of food security and economic growth.

This consultation is the first of several regional sessions planned for December. These follow-up meetings will engage more stakeholders from different regions of the country, providing further opportunities to refine the regulations based on localized needs and experiences.

Through these efforts, COPRA, AMDT, and other partners are working to create a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector in Tanzania.
